AKARUA ROSÉ, Brut. Central Otago, New Zealand

Bin:  60

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Central Otago on the south island is the ruggedly beautiful source of a lot of expensive and impressive (still) Pinot Noir.
From their website:
Akarua’s 50 hectare site on Cairnmuir Road in Bannockburn, which lies at 270 metres above sea level. The soil fine and sandy with loam topsoil overlaying schist. Vines are 12 years old.

Grape variety:

56% Pinot Noir, 44% Chardonnay. Around 10% of the total is still red Pinot Noir to give the required colour. All put through second fermentation in bottle; 18 months “on the lees”.

Owned by the Skeggs family and benefitting from the help of consultant Tony Jordan, who put Domaine Chandon on the map in Australia and is one of the world’s few international sparkling wine experts.

Old Bridge rating:

The wine includes 15% older “reserve” wines and has also been through the second (softening) “malolactic fermentation. But the style remains deliciously bright and fresh – the result is all about crunchy red fruit. (A dry style, with only 6g of residual sugar).

Press review:

“Lots of small batch fermentation, and one will be fermented half way on skins and then pressed off to get colour but not too much tannin. This is used as the colour component, and this is added at tirage. Pale pink colour. Linear and fruity with nice precision, showing subtle redcurrant and cherry notes, and good acidity keeping things fresh. Lovely pure fruit here. Dry style. Lovely. 91/100” – Jamie Goode, wine anorak.com
