2020 Now finished: ALBARIÑO, O Con, Vino de Encostas, Xose Lois Sebio. Galicia, Spain

Bin:  213

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Galicia is the cool, green, far north-west corner of Spain, producing wines very different to those in the warm interior. In the words of UK agent, Hallgarten, “The grapes for O Con come from a single vineyard ‘Sobre a Mina’ in the Aios area in Sanxenxo. The old, low yielding 70 year old Albariño vines are planted at a density of 1,000 to 2,000 vines per hectare and produce grapes with concentrated flavours. The vineyard is situated on a hillside at an altitude of between 50 to 100 metres above sea level, where it is influenced by cooling sea breezes from the Atlantic. The vineyard is cultivated in the traditional manner and the schistous soils imbue the wine with an intense character and mineral style.”

Grape variety:

100% Albariño, matured (unusually) for 10 months in French oak barrels (but no new wood).

Producer:

Winemaker Xosé Lois Sebio specialises in finding vineyards with unusual characteristics and making wines of rare and very individual character.

Old Bridge rating:

Not  your typical Albariño, but a very successful attempt at a more powerful, serious style.
