2015 ALOXE CORTON, Les Brunettes et Planchots, Château de Santenay. Burgundy

Bin:  455

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Aloxe Corton is famous above all for the white Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne, sitting around the top of the small hill above the village, and to a lesser extent for the red Grand Crus of Corton and Corton Bressandes.

The wines labelled simply Aloxe-Corton (like those from neighbouring villages Ladoix and Pernand-Vergelesses) go somewhat under the radar. In the past they have been rather chunky, rustic examples of red Côte de Beaune but better winemaking has really changed that stereotype.

Les Brunettes et Planchons is the (unusually long) name for a tiny vineyard right next to the village, on the west side.

From 2021 Château de Santenay has been re-named as  Domaine du Château Philippe le Hardi, after the Duke of Burgundy who owned the estate centuries ago. It’s one of the largest Domaines in Burgundy (almost 100ha) and is owned by the bank Credit Agricole.

Old Bridge rating:

Deep in colour, this is powerful young Burgundy from a very ripe vintage. Benefits from decanting.
