2019 ALTER. Ribeiro, Galicia, Spain

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

From the website of their UK agent, Liberty Wines:
“The winery was founded by José Pérez Pousa on the banks of the Miño river in 2014, with the wish to preserve the tradition of their native land, where wine has been produced since the 2nd century BC.
Alter has 24 hectares of its own vineyards, which are on average 15 to 30 years old and are planted on decomposed granite, with sand and clay. 90% of the production is from the native white varieties Treixadura, Godello and Loureira, with the rest from the native red varieties Brancellao and Sousón.
The climate in Ribeiro is influenced by the Atlantic but also sheltered by the mountains. The region benefits from warm days and cool nights during the growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining their signature fresh acidity.”

Grape variety:

Treixadura, Godello and Loureiro

Old Bridge rating:

North West Spain is a treasure trove of native varieties producing (potentially) outstanding wine in a near perfect climate (cool but sunny). This has the classic character of the region – that combination of delicacy and richness which makes it both easily drinkable and constantly interesting.
