2017 ARNEIS, San Michele, Deltetto. Roero, Piedmont, Italy

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Piedmont is of course most famous for the majestic wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, and to a lesser extent the food-friendly, fresh reds made from Barbera and Dolcetto. When it comes to whites Gavi is the internationally recognised name, but in fact it’s two other grapes, Timorasso and Arneis that produce the more interesting wines.
Roero is north west of Alba, a gently rolling sub-region with sandy soils and San Michele is the name of a single vineyard of 40+ year old, low yielding vines.

Grape variety:

100% Arneis, a third fermented and matured for 6 months in French oak (but no new wood), just to give a hint of richness.

Antonio Deltetto and his 3 children Carlo, Cristina and Claudia have 21 hectares of vines in Roero.

Old Bridge rating:

The freshness and delicacy that is synonymous with almost all Italian whites, but here with a level of intensity and subtle richness rarely seen elsewhere.
