2015 ARTEMIS, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Napa Valley, California (Half)

Bin:  899

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

Stag’s Leap is the name of both the winery and the sub-district of Napa Valley. This estate and it’s then winemaker Warren Winiarski won worldwide renown when their 1973 won the famous 1976 wine tasting at which California Cabernets were pitted against the five Bordeaux ‘first growths’. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has maintained exemplary consistency since then.
The Stag’s Leap district is a hillside region just south of Oakville, east of the town of Yountville, and home to some of Napa’s finest reds.
Artemis is their ‘introductory’ wine, a blend made up of the younger vines on the estate.

Grape variety:

98% Cabernet Sauvignon with just 1% Merlot and 1% Malbec, matured for 17 months in wood (90% French, of which a third was new, and 10% new American oak).

Press review:

“The least expensive Cabernet in this winery’s range, given 18 months in oak. Mid crimson. Attractive balsam notes and ripe but not too-ripe fruit. Good freshness and accessibility as well as sweetness. Neat, fairly persistent finish. Not that dense but none the worse for that. Very flattering.” – Jancis Robinson on jancisrobinson.com
