2016 AUXEY-DURESSES ROUGE, 1er Cru, Taupenot-Merme. Burgundy

Bin:  460

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Auxey-Duresses is a relatively little-known village, tucked just behind Meursault. An outstanding source of (relatively) good value Burgundy, particularly in good vintages. It is well described here:
“Geologically, Auxey-Duresses is an extension of Monthélie and Meursault, with stony limestone soils in vineyards that skew often to the southeast, giving them prime exposure. Most of the village’s vineyards sit at the entrance to one of many narrow valleys, or combes, that run up into the ‘Hautes Côtes’ (“upper slopes”) and forested mountains to the west. These valleys serve as funnels for cool air from the hills above, so southern-leaning aspect of the vineyards is counterbalanced by the slightly cooler microclimate” – ‘SommSelect’.

Producer:

Romain Taupenot is the 7th generation of his family to run the estate. They are based in Morey-St-Denis, neighbouring Chambolle-Musigny, but have vineyards in 20 appellations in several villages. In total they have 13 hectares under vine.

Old Bridge rating:

Pure, aromatic and very charming example of a fine vintage for red Burgundy
