2014 AZAMOR. Alentejo, Portugal

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

The Alentejo is a vast region to the south of Portugal, also home to huge forests of cork oak. Known as ‘the bread basket’ of Portugal and now an excellent source for good value reds. The Azamor vineyards are at high altitude (350m), which means cool nights, helping to retain freshness in the wines

Grape variety:

20% Syrah, 17% Touriga Franca, 17% Alicante Bouschet, 17% Merlot, 13% Touriga Nacional, 10% Trincadeira, 6% Petit Verdot; aged for 7 months in French and American oak

Producer:

A small estate of just 27 hectares, purchased in 1998 by Alison and Joaquim Luiz-Gomes

Old Bridge rating:

So many Portuguese reds are impressively rich but disarmingly tannic. This has the brightness and balance that most others lack

Food match:

Herby, spicy element would work beautifully with lamb; but bright and fresh enough to partner more gentle weekday suppers – mushroom risotto; spag bol; game terrine.
