2021 BANYULS, Bila Haut. Roussillon, South of France (50cl Bottle)

Banyuls is a beautiful, tiny coastal town, south of Perpignan and not far from the Spanish border. The vineyards stretch inland but from their steep slopes look out over the Mediterranean. Neighbour is the even more picturesque fishing village of Collioure – which gives its name to the white and red wines of the region.

Grenache, fortified with spirit to produce a Port-style red (but less alcoholic) with around 90g of sugar per litre.

Michel Chapoutier is the dynamic and respected head of his family’s large business, based in the Rhône but with vineyards all round France and also in Portugal and Australia.

Fascinating drink for the experimental enthusiast. Great with chocolate puddings, or blue cheese.
