2009 BAROLO, Baudana Vineyard, Luigi Baudana. Piedmont, Italy

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Barolo is just south of Alba, which itself is south of Turin. The Langhe hills produce Italy’s most revered red wines from the Nebbiolo grape. The village of Baudana is in the commune of Serralunga D’Alba

Grape variety:

100% Nebbiolo, macerated for a long period (around 35 days on skins) then matured for 3.5 years in large, old oak barrels

Producer:

The tiny (4 hectare) estate of Baudana was recently bought by the great Barolo producer, Aldo Vajra. The latter’s estate is at Vergne, close to the town of Barolo itself, so they have decided to keep the Baudana winery and label completely separate. They produce 3 wines and the Baudana vineyard is a single block of vines at 300m, facing south west

Old Bridge rating:

Relatively gentle for a Barolo – there is a certain mellowness to offset the classically dry and serious structure of all Nebbiolo
