1999 BAROLO, Granbussia, Aldo Conterno. Piedmont, Italy (Magnum)

Bin:  899

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

From the village of Monforte D’Alba, at the heart of the Langhe hills, where one finds the hauntingly beautiful vineyards that make Italy’s greatest wines. Granbussia is Conterno’s selection of his best grapes from the vineyards Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello, all of which are on the larger hillside vineyard called Bussia

Grape variety:

Nebbiolo, aged for 3 years in large old Slovenian oak barrels

Producer:

Aldo Conterno split from his brother Giovanni (of Giacomo Conterno) to form his own estate in 1969. He is essentially a traditionalist but his son Franco has introduced some more modern styles. This, however, is resolutely traditional

Vintage:

– a great year

Maturity potential:

Decant two hours in advance if drinking now.
At its peak from 2015

Old Bridge rating:

Absolutely top of the tree in Italy – but give it time to breathe
