2018 Now finished: BAROLO, Patres, San Silvestro. Piedmont, Italy

Bin:  658

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Barolo is in the Langhe hills, south of Turin, in Piedmont. Long renowned as the greatest red wine district in Italy, it is finally proving worthy of that reputation, as a new generation of winemakers learn how to coax the best out of the difficult Nebbiolo grape (and also the Barbera and Dolcetto that also proliferate here).

Grape variety:

100% Nebbiolo, matured for two years in large, old Slavonian oak barrels and then a year and tank before bottling.

Producer:

San Silvestro is run by fourth generation Paolo and Guido Sartirano. They are based in the Commune of Novello, outside the actual Barolo district, but they buy grapes from eleven different sites within the DOCG region and then blend them together to make ‘Patres’.

Old Bridge rating:

Unusually approachable (and affordable) example of the great Nebbiolo grape.
