2016 BASTARDO, Conceito. Portugal

Bin:  360

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Conceito are in the ‘Douro Superior’, meaning high up the Douro Valley, towards Spain. The 75 hectares of vineyards are in the adjoining Teija Valley, which is considerably cooler than its much more famous neighbouring region. This is from a single block of Bastardo, which was once an important Port grape but is now out of favour because of its pale colour.

Grape variety:

Bastardo is elsewhere called Trousseau Noir; trod by foot in lagares (like Port) and matured in old oak for 10 months

Conceito (which means ‘concept’) is owned by Rita Ferriera, having trained in South Africa, France and New Zealand as well as with Dirk Niepoort in the Douro. First vintage was 2004.

Old Bridge rating:

Floral and perfumed; light and delicate but with substance beneath

£20.90 per bottle in a mixed case of 6 bottles
