2013 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO, Costanti. Tuscany (Half Bottle)

Bin:  2507

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Montalcino is a hill-top town in the warm, open country in southern Tuscany, about 45 minutes down from Siena. Although the key grape is the same as for Chianti Classico further north, the style is broader and more powerful.

Grape variety:

100% Sangiovese, matured for a year in large (5 hectolitres) French oak barrels, followed by 2 years in Slavonian oak barrels (30 hectolitres).

Andra Costanti has just seven hectares of vineyard, next to the town of Montalcino. This is the higher, northern part of region and as a result the style is lighter and finer than the wines made from the warmer, low-lying areas.

Old Bridge rating:

After making no Brunello in 2014, the 2015 is a classic example.

Press review:

“2013 was much cooler than preceding vintages, and Andrea waited until the beginning of October to harvest. He says it was a good year with plenty of structure, but felt it didn’t have the longevity to merit making a Riserva. Indeed, rather than a voluble powerhouse this is an understated beauty. Tight and linear with lifted florals and a hint of orange, it has mouthwatering acidity and superb freshness, and will appeal to those who prize finesse. 94/100”. Decanter Magazine.
