2008 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO, Costanti. Tuscany

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Montalcino is a hill-top town in the warm, open country in southern Tuscany, about 45 minutes down from Siena. Although the key grape is the same as for Chianti Classico further north, the style is broader and more powerful

Grape variety:

100% Sangiovese (here called Brunello); aged for 18 months in French oak (large oak, not new) and then for a further 18 months in very large, old Slovenian oak barrels

Producer:

Costanti have just seven hectares of vineyard, next to the town of Montalcino. This is the higher, northern part of region and as a result the style is lighter and finer than the wines made from the warmer, low-lying areas

Old Bridge rating:

Full-bodied with complex, earthy aromas. Still young however, so certainly worth decanting half an hour before drinking

Press review:

“Andrea Costanti is one of the most consistent growers in Montalcino, and it shows in the 2008 Brunello diMontalcino, a wine that impresses for its elegance, finesse and harmony. Sweet dark cherries, tobacco, licorice and savory herbs all flesh out in the glass. Surprisingly pliant and generous for the year, the 2008 is a model of class and pure pedigree. Approachable today, the 2008 should have no problem aging gracefully to age 20 and likely beyond. It is without question one of the few great wines of the year. Spiced notes flesh out on the generous, seductive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. 93/100” – Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
“Costanti is one of the great traditional estates of Montalcino, but Andrea Costanti is not afraid to use some French tonneaux as well as bigger Slavonian oak casks for his Brunello. This is a serious wine that’s intended to age further in bottle, with attrac- tive pepper and spice, sweet tobacco and red fruit flavours underpinned by a hint of vanilla, medium weight tannins and the tangy acidity that is often a mark of the estate’s impressively balanced wines.
Drink: 2015-28. 95/100” www.TimAtkin.com
