2019 CABERNET FRANC, Chamonix. Franschhoek, South Africa

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Franschhoek is a great town for tourists but has only recently started making excellent wine, as producers look beyond the valley floor to the less fertile hillsides. This wine comes from vineyards at 350-400m altitude. (Much of the stuff made from the low-lying areas that one sees from the road is really very ordinary).

Grape variety:

100% Cabernet Franc, matured for 18 months in French oak (only a tiny proportion of new oak)

Producer:

Standards of excellence were set here by Gottfried Mocke, a very talented winemaker at Chamonix (now moved on to Boekenhoutskloof) who took the brand from average to excellent in a very short time. Chamonix was the SA winery of the year in the important ‘John Platter Guide’ for 2013.

Old Bridge rating:

Cabernet Franc is just that bit lighter and less structured than Cabernet Sauvignon – its potential in new world regions is only just being discovered. This is a wine of richness and intensity, but with freshness and balance too. It really improves with decanting.
