2016 CABERNET SAUVIGNON, Frog’s Leap. Napa Valley, California

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Organic

Grape variety:

89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak for 18 months (no new oak)

Producer:

Frog’s Leap is run by the brilliant and idiosyncratic John Williams. Here is his introduction to this wine:
“Living and working among the vineyards of Rutherford for the last four decades kindled a dream…
an estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon that embodies the unique characteristics of this storied appellation.
The Rutherford Appellation encompasses just over six square miles in the center of the Napa Valley, between the east-facing Vaca Mountain Range and the Mayacamas Range on the west.
As one of the early pioneers of organic grape growing, I can never overstate the importance of healthy soils. The introduction of dry farming by Frank Leeds and his uncle, Roy Chavez, helped us align our farming with the natural interest of the vines. Fruit from the Chavez & Leeds vineyard is included in our estate-grown wine.
Most of the great and historic wines of the world are made from non-irrigated vines. Dry farming leads to more intensely flavored grapes — sweet, dense, and small.
This wine…… represents four decades of tasting, learning, experimenting and executing on the passion inspired in me by the words of André Tchelistcheff. ‘Rutherford Dust’—the idea that a wine could smell and taste so much of the place from where it was grown.”

Maturity potential:

2020-2029

Food match:

Treat it as you would a fine claret – better with clean roasts than sweeter, richer dishes.

Press review:

“Generous blackberry nose, forthright fruit with herbal notes. Plump and juicy, medium-weight with zesty acidity” – 92/100, Decanter Magazine, December 2019.
(But they did mis-read it slightly, it’s not really ‘plump’ in our opinion).
