2016 CAHORS, Terrasse, Causse du Théron. SW France

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Cahors is in south west France, around the Lot River. Vines are on gravel terraces next to the river, or on the limestone plateau above.
Traditionally the wines have been dark and impenetrable. Modern examples have gone the other way, aiming for luscious fruit and oak. This example is seeking for a new direction.

Grape variety:

Malbec, fermented with as gentle handling as possible and matured without any oak.

A joint venture between Antonio Morescalchi who is in charge of of Altos Las Hormigos in Mendoza, his consultant Erazo Lynch and actual winemaker Attilio Pagli, together with renowned Chilean soil consultant Pedro Parra.
Their aim is to show how elegant and serious Malbec can be on the limestone soils of Cahors.

Old Bridge rating:

Argentinian Malbec is often too heavy, too oaky. Cahors Malbec is often too dry and too tough. This does have tannin and backbone – but there is really complexity and with time a silky elegance with certainly emerge.

Press review:

“A pristine aromatic profile: pretty violets and red cherries. Intense, explosive, brisk and bright palate characterized by almost-sour red fruits and delicate tannin, sweetening and filling a little towards the end” – Andrew Jefford.
