2012 CAIRANNE, L’Estévenas, Denis Alary. Southern Rhône

Bin:  690

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Cairanne used to be one of the villages that could add its name to the appellation Côtes du Rhône Villages, but it is now considered worthy of its own independent identity. Possibly a mistake, as the generic term does have greater recognition. Anyway it’s an excellent, hilly terrain, just next to Rasteau and north of Gigondas

Grape variety:

Unusually for a southern Rhône red, this has as much Syrah as it does Grenache; kept 2/3 in concrete tank and 1/3 in large wooden vats, for 6 months before bottling

Producer:

A family owned domaine which can trace its roots to 1672. It is now run by Denis with children Jean-Etienne and Benedictite. They have around 25 hectares of red vineyard and 3 of red, all around the village

Press review:

“Animal notes and real transparency. Racy. Very distinctive. The Syrah comes racing through on the nose. Clean, fresh, quite cool.” Jancis Robinson
