Capezzana is in the Carmignano region, 24km’s north west of Florence. The area is distinct from neighbouring Chianti, having a slightly warmer climate, especially in autumn, allowing for the full ripening of grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon. It also means they have a reliably consistent olive crop.

The gorgeous 100 hectare Capezzana estate has been owned by the Contini Bonacossi family for centuries. Barco Reale (the name of their less expensive red) means ‘royal palace’ and refers to the property of the Medici Grand Dukes, who were (unsurprisingly) previous owners.
They have around 25,000 olive tress, mainly of the Moraiolo variety.

Old Bridge rating:

Delicate and yet peppery, this represents the essence of why Tuscan olive oil is so highly prized.
But use it within its first 6 months, when its freshness and vivacity is at its height.
