2021 CARIGNAN, Dom Ici. Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon

Bin:  401

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Roussillon is a comparatively small area to the south of the Languedoc, inland from Perpignan. It’s home to ancient vines in dramatic, wind-swept sites and increasingly dynamic producers (both small and large).

Grape variety:

40 year old bush vine Carignan, fermented in steel and matured for just 3 months before bottling – the accent is on bright, juicy, pure fruit.

Producer:

Dom Ici is made by Dom Brial, described by agent HN wines as “a cooperative of passionate producers are following the footsteps of Dom Brial, a Benedictine monk, who was born in Roussillon. Established in 1923, the winery was created with the philosophy of ‘Together We Are Stronger’, in response to the Phylloxera crisis that devastated many vineyards in the Roussillon. Today, the dynamic cooperative represents 247 winegrowers who cultivate the mosaic of diverse terroirs. Pioneers of sustainable development, Dom Brial covers 1,700 hectares which has been certified since 2007 as ‘Sustainable Winegrowing’, including 200-hectares of organically farmed vineyard.”

Old Bridge rating:

Fresh and lively, almost comparable to Beaujolais, but with a touch more firmness and ‘structure’.
