2019 CARMENERE, Montes Alpha. Colchagua Valley, Chile

Bin:  605

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Colchagua is perhaps the most consistent region for serious Bordeaux-style reds in Chile. This particular vine comes from (as explained by UK agent Liberty wines) “Montes’ own vineyards in Apalta and Marchigüe, arguably two of the finest sites in the Colchagua Valley. The sites are irrigated via a ‘Sustainable Dry Farmed’ system which allows for precise and minimal irrigating. In Apalta, vines are planted on 45° slopes, providing good exposure to achieve ripeness. Cool ocean breezes and low night-time temperatures help to moderate this warm area, allowing for slow ripening. Marchigüe is slightly cooler because of its closer proximity to the ocean. Conditions are dry, with the region lying in the rain shadow of the Coastal Range, reducing the threat of fungal disease and resulting in consistently healthy harvests.”

Grape variety:

90% Carmenère and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, half matured in French oak, half kept in steel tank.

Aurelio Montes is a larger-than-life wine-entrepreneur whose range manages to offer high quality at all price levels. He also owns Kaiken in Argentina.

Old Bridge rating:

Full-bodied, powerful but nicely balanced example of Chile’s specialism. Carmenère is still found in Bordeaux, but only in Chile is it marketed as a key grape. Related to Merlot, and offering similar fruit intensity, but with an added herbal, spicy twist.
