2010 CARMIGNANO, Villa di Capezzana. Tuscany

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Capezzana is in the Carmignano region, 24km’s north west of Florence. The area is distinct from neighbouring Chianti, having a slightly warmer climate, especially in autumn, allowing for the full ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grape variety:

80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet, aged for 14 months in large French oak barrels

Producer:

The gorgeous 100 hectare Capezzana estate has been owned by the Contini Bonacossi family for centuries. Barco Reale (the name of their less expensive red) means ‘royal palace’ and refers to the property of the Medici Grand Dukes, who were (unsurprisingly) previous owners. This is their flagship wine, representing the classic style of Carmignano.

Maturity potential:

Capezanna’s Carmignano always ages well (up to 20 years), despite being approachable young.

Old Bridge rating:

This great, historic estate is on brilliant form; this is a fine, mature vintage of their flagship wine. Perfect balance of ripeness and intensity with lots of savoury, grainy character so typical of Sangiovese.

Food match:

If you ever eat at Capezzana you will never forget the combination of simple roast meat and a great Carmignano.
