Felipe Gutiérrez de la Vega makes wine from his 12 hectares of vineyard in Parcent, in the province of Alicante. The Moscatel grapes are partially dried on straw mats passito style after picking, resulting in a very high residual sugar (149 grammes per litre)

Grape variety:

Moscatel (Muscat of Alexandria) grapes aged in a variety of used old oak barrels for just 2 months

La Bascula is the name given to a new Spanish wine range produced by Ed Adams MW and Bruce Jack. The term means weighing scales, and represents the balance between indigenous Spanish varieties and modern winemaking. For this wine they work in partnership with Felipe Gutiérrez de la Vega, above

Maturity potential:

No point in maturing

Old Bridge rating:

Un-complicated but entirely delicious. Orange blossom and candied walnuts (the vineyard is in fact surround by orange and almond groves). Outstanding example of this style. Very high sweetness level but you would never know. Entirely naturally produced (and as it is un-filtered it does have some very fine sediment).

Food match:

Orange hints make this a no-brainer with orange or citrus puds. Rich enough for a marmalade sponge, delicate enough for a lighter orange mousse or similar. Ed also recommends blue cheese
