2014 CHABLIS, 1er Cru, Les Côtes de Fontenay, Vrignaud

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Northern Chablis is of course the region in Burgundy to produce the lightest, leanest, most ‘austere’ wines of the region. It’s all about the knife-edge balance of acidity and delicate, under-stated fruit.
This comes from a tiny vineyard within the well-known Fourchaume – “The 1.23 hectare 1er Cru ‘Côtes de Fontenay’ single vineyard is situated in the north of Chablis above the Ru de Fontenay stream, a tributary connecting the village of Fontenay-prés-Chablis to the Serein river. Such was the fame of Côte de Fontenay in the 16th century that it was known as ‘La Grande Côte’. The vineyards here benefit from an ideal south-facing aspect. The vines are 56 years old and yield exceptionally concentrated grapes.” – Quoted from Vrginaud’s UK agent.

Grape variety:

100% Chardonnay

Like many producers, the Vrignaud family were simply growers, supplying grapes to the co-operative, until Guillaume joined the family in 1999 and started to make his own wines. They have now expanded to 27 hectares of vines in total.

A superb year for white Burgundy – the wines have beautiful purity and freshness.

Old Bridge rating:

Absolutely classic Chablis – searing freshness and admirable concentration.
