2012 CHAKALAKA, Spice Route. Swartland, South Africa

Bin:  605

Alcohol percentage:  14%

Area:

Spice Route are based in Swartland, the warm area north of Cape Town, close to the west coast, now source of many of SA’s trendiest full reds

Grape variety:

29% Syrah, 13% Carignan, 29% Mourvedre, 13% Grenache, 8% Tannat, 8% Petite Sirah; all matured in French oak (25% new) for 13 months

Producer:

Spice Route is the creation of Charles Back who also owns Fairview in Paarl and Goats do Roam. Chakalaka takes its name from a spicy South African relish

Old Bridge rating:

A jumble of grape varieties giving a unique and lively array of flavours. Full bodied, broad and peppery. Gold Medal and Trophy in the 2012 Decanter World Wine Awards

Food match:

Inevitably we suggest something spicy – a gentle chicken curry or even lamb would work; but nothing too fiery!
