2016 CHARDONNAY, Bilancia. Gimblett Gravels, New Zealand

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Hawkes Bay, on the east coast of the north island, is the region in NZ best suited to rich whites and medium bodied reds. It’s still not warm by new world standards, and the wines are generally elegant and under-stated.
The most renowned sub-region is Gimblett Gravels, where extremely stoney soils are making for an intensely peppery style of Syrah and some punchy examples of Chardonnay and white Rhône varieties.

Grape variety:

100% Chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed, wild yeast fermented and matured in French oak (very little new wood) for 15 months.

Producer:

Bilancia is named after the Italian word for balance, harmony and equilibrium; it’s the scales of the zodiac (libra). It’s the personal project of winemakers Lorraine Leheny and Warren Gibson (of Trinity Hill), started in 1997.

Old Bridge rating:

Very classy new world Chardonnay. Not over ‘made’ or forced, a bright but delicate style.
