2019 CHARDONNAY, ‘Three Lions’, Plantagenet. Great Southern, W. Aus

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Great Southern is in the Deep South of Western Australia, a few hours east of its more famous ‘neighbour’ Margaret River. The key to both is a relatively mild climate, cooled by a fairly constant breeze from the southern ocean.

Grape variety:

Chardonnnay, a small proportion fermented and matured in oak, but all kept ‘on lees’ for 8 months

Plantagenet was the first winery in the Great Southern region – Tony Smith invested in the first plantings in the late 60s and the first vintage was in 1974. Chris Murtha was recently appointed Chief Winemaker, having joined the winemaking team in 2012. “My absolute focus is to produce wines that speak of the Great Southern region. Classic cool climate wines that are finely structured and intensely aromatic, refined and complex while retaining fruit purity and brightness”

Old Bridge rating:

One of the few modern Chardonnays that seems to combine successfully some clear Chardonnay character (weight, richness and a hint of oak) with lively, lime and lemon freshness
