2021 CHARDONNAY, Tolpuddle. Tasmania, Australia

Bin:  1403

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Tasmania (next stop south is Antarctica) is Australia’s genuinely cool climate region. It’s cold, but also pretty dry, allowing for a long disease-free ripening period.
Tolpuddle is a 20 hectare, north-east facing vineyard in Coal River Valley, first planted in 1988.

Grape variety:

Chardonnay hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, fermented and matured in French oak for 9 months (one third new barrels).

Producer:

Toplpuddle vineyard was purchased in 2011 by Shaw and Smith – the renowned winery in Adelaide Hills, South Australia, owned by Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. Winemaker is Adam Wadewitz.

Old Bridge rating:

One of the very best examples of the new breed of cool, elegant Aussie Chardonnays. Needs at least 5 years in the bottle to show at its best.
