2001 Château BARDE-HAUT, Grand Cru. St Emilion

Bin:  800

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

A 17 hectare estate to the east of the village of St Emilion, with the classic clay-chalk soil of the region

Grape variety:

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, aged in new oak for 18 months

Producer:

Barde-Haut was bought by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard in 2000. Her daughter Helene now runs the estate wtih husband Patrice Leveque, along with Clos L’Eglise (Pomerol, just 6 hectares), Haut-Bergey and Branon (both Pessac-Léognan) and, last but not least, Poesia, in Mendoza, Argentina

Maturity potential:

2008-2018

Old Bridge rating:

Classic St Emilion – the richness of Merlot restrained by the cool elegance of all ‘proper’ Bordeaux

Press review:

“The 2001 Barde-Haut is just reaching its plateau of full maturity. Gorgeously complex notes of plums, underbrush, flowers, and earth are accompanied by a fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and no hard edges. This wine should keep for another decade” – Robert Parker ‘The Hedonist’s Gazette – Dinner with friends in St Emilion – March 2009’
