2015 Château FONTARÈCHE BLANC. Corbières, S. France

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

The Corbières are a spectacular, rugged range of hills south of Narbonne, north of Perpignan. The wines, at best, have the generosity of a sun-drenched climate combined with the spice and individuality forged by both the infertile ‘terroir’ and the dominance of small, owner-operated estates

Grape variety:

Blend of southern varieties – Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Maccabeu; just a small proportion matured in barrel to add a little extra texture and ‘weight’

Producer:

Château de Fontarèche is just north of Lezignan-Corbières; its 200 hectares have been owned by the same family since 1682

Maturity potential:

Drink young while aromatic and fresh

Old Bridge rating:

From the warm and rugged south – very much red wine country – a white of surprising delicacy and perfume. It’s the small proportion of Roussanne grapes giving that touch of real classs

Food match:

Characterful and delicate enough to make a great aperitif, but enough body and ‘backbone’ to match a variety of dishes, including anything with a bit of spice or smokiness
