2011 Château GRAND PUY LACOSTE, 5me Cru. Pauillac, Bordeaux

Bin:  800

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Pauillac is the central and most prestigious area in the Médoc. GPL is on a gravel outcrop (so typical of the region, and the key to the quality of its Cabernet).

Grape variety:

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot; matured in oak (two thirds new) for 20 months.

Producer:

Owned by the Borie family since 1978, this is one of the best ‘fifth growths’ in the Médoc.

Vintage:

An early-drinking year. Too many clarets in 2011 are green and mean; this, however, has the ripeness to escape that criticism.

Maturity potential:

2018-28; at its peak around 2022 but very drinkable already.
