2015 Château POTENSAC, Cru Bourgeois. Médoc, Bordeaux

Bin:  530

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Potensac is in the northern Médoc. The 60 hectares of vineyard, as described on their website, “extend mainly over hilly mounds with a limestone subsoil covered with clay and gravel outcrops containing a high proportion of gravel. These limestone soils are very similar to those found in the (nearby) Saint-Estèphe appellation.”

Grape variety:

Cabernet Sauvignon 38%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 17%.

Producer:

Owned by the Delon family whose other properties are Léoville Las Cases in St Julien and Nenin in Pomerol.

Old Bridge rating:

Young, of course, but this has the ripeness and intensity of the warm 2015 vintage, making it approachable at a young age.

Press review:

“One might have expected Potensac to have produced an intimidating wine in this fine vintage, but it’s actually quite accessible and fluid. The nose is sweet and ripe, with elegant cherry and blackcurrant aromas. The tannins are firm but ripe, giving grip, but there’s complexity and spice too. Assertive and long.” Stephen Brook in Decanter Magazine (in an article entitled the 8 top buys in the northern Medoc).
“Only 55% of fruit was used here for the Grand Vin which actually improved both this and the second wine. With high-density planting and soils like Saint-Estèphe this is a great terroir and with old vines (40 years old) this is the reason why this wine is so delicious. Quite forward and very bright with typical swagger and density of cassis this is a brilliant wine. A little rounder than 2014 but I love this style equally because the 2014 had more obviously classical tannins.” Matthew Jukes
