2010 Château VILLA BEL AIR BLANC. Graves, Bordeaux

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Graves is the long-famous area just south of the town of Bordeaux. Since 1987, however, the northern section has been called Pessac-Léognan, and the most famous estates (Haut-Brion and La Mission) are now not officially ‘Graves’. The soil throughout the region is gravel and sand

Grape variety:

65% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Semillon; matured for 9 months in new French oak

Producer:

Owned by the Cazes family who also have Lynch Bages and Ormes de Pez, this is an immaculately run estate

Maturity potential:

2013-2018. At its peak from 2014

Old Bridge rating:

Rare to find serious white Bordeaux of this quality at this price. Most examples are pure Sauvignon Blanc and, at best, pleasantly fresh. This has the waxiness and texture added by the Semillon proportion and the use of oak, without being in any way heavy or ‘oaky’

Food match:

Proper white Bordeaux is very food-friendly: pork, chicken, fish, salads
