2014 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, Clos des Papes. Rhône

Bin:  682

Alcohol percentage:  15%

Grape variety:

Grenache with 20% Mourvèdre and around 10% Syrah; aged for a year in large, old, oak barrels

Press review:

18/20, Jancis Robinson: More pickers were used and more grapes discarded in this vintage.
“Lightish cherry red. Utterly seductive and beautifully red-fruited on the nose. Red cherry and a touch of spice. On the palate, the fruit sweetness is beautifully balanced by the bitterness of the cherry stone. Opulent and super-smooth, on the cusp between velvet and silky. Gorgeous and so long. You could approach this with pleasure now though plenty more to come.”
95/100, Decanter Magazine:
“Paul and Vincent Avril, a father and son team, have established themselves as one of the finest producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Despite being predominantly Grenache, it is reminiscent of an elegant northern Rhône Syrah with the texture of a Pinot. With a medium bodied intensity, it has a beautiful red fruit expression with some savoury notes. Harmony, finesse and elegance are probably the three words that best describe this beauty.”
