2020 CHENIN BLANC, Duwweltjie, Thistle and Weed. Paarl, South Africa

Bin:  222

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Paarl is warm-climate region north of Stellenbosch, generally producing big, rather ‘traditional’ reds. This comes from old bush vines on the lower slopes of the Joostenberg and proves the value of Chenin Blanc in this climate – the freshness is remarkable.

Grape variety:

100% Chenin Blanc, fermented and matured in older oak barrels for 10 months.

Producer:

From their website:
“Thistle and Weed is a collaboration between the Terblanche and Wiid families established in 2015, led by Etienne Terblanche (Viticulturist) and Stephanie Wiid (Winemaker).
Inspired by the encroaching weeds found amongst the vines grown in the Cape, Etienne and Steph draw parallels between thistles and weeds and the uncompromising tenacity and survival skills of grapevines.”
Duwweltjies are the ‘devil’s thorns’ growing in the vineyard.

Old Bridge rating:

One of the most brilliant (and charming) South African Chenins we have tried, and there have been a few. Peachy ripeness with brightness and lightness too.
