2019 CHENIN BLANC, Villiera. Stellenbosch, South Africa (due back mid-Oct)

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Although Stellenbosch is the most famous area in South Africa, it is actually pretty large and very variable. The Villiera estate is in the northern part, half way to Paarl.

Grape variety:

100% Chenin Blanc. A third fermented in oak and the rest in steel, then blended and kept on the lees for 2 months before bottling.

Producer:

Villiera is an estate started in 1983, owned and run by the Grier family. Cathy (who has hosted a tasting at The Old Bridge) oversees sales, brother Jeff is the winemaker, with son Xander now very much in the team.
As well as 170 hectares of vineyard, they also have a 220 hectare wildlife reserve on site – visit for a game drive before your tasting!
The last decade has seen a new emphasis on sustainable farming; pure, clean, very modern winemaking; and new, crisp, clever labelling. This is a winery with admirable ethics, now producing excellent quality at very sensible prices.

Maturity potential:

Drink young.

Old Bridge rating:

Classic example of fresh, lively South African Chenin. Not big and complex like the boutique examples from Swartland, but ripe, rounded and nicely balanced.
