2011 CLOS DE VOUGEOT, Grand Cru, Alain Hudelot-Noëllat. Burgundy (Magnum)

Bin:  891

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Clos de Vougeot is the largest red Grand Cru in Burgundy and quality is, frankly, variable. The small section of Hudelot-Noëllat vines (about half a hectare or 1 acre, planted in the 1950s) are at the western edge, next to Grands-Echezeaux, and neighbouring the holdings of Mao-Camuzet and Domaine Leroy.

Grape variety:

Pinot Noir, fermented 20% as whole bunches, matured in barrel for 16 months (half new wood).

The domaine is now run (since 2007) by Alain’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt. He has 10 hectares of vines, spread over 15 appellations, all in the heart of the Côte de Nuits.

Press review:

“Some charming evolution on the nose. Very relaxed, beautiful fruit and fluidity on the palate. Not yet that complex but with great, well-sculpted promise. Quite rich and satisfying and with definite grand-cru intensity. 18.5/20 points.” Jancis Robinson, October 2014

“This is one of my favorite examples of Clos Vougeot year in and year out and the 2011 is another classic in the making. The beautifully refined nose delivers scents of cherries, red plums, raw cocoa, gamebirds, a complex base of soil and a stylish framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely reserved, with excellent purity and focus, fine mid-palate concentration, ripe, firm tannins and excellent grip on the well-balanced and very long finish. Fine juice. Drink between 2023-2060”. John Gilman.
