2013 CONTINO, ‘17 BARRICAS’ Rioja, Spain

Bin:  592

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Grape variety:

80% Tempranillo, 13% Graciano, 7% Garnacha aged 20 months in French and American oak.

Contino is relatively unusual in Rioja being a single estate (most wines are blends) and is owned by the large but excellent producer Cvne. The east is just over 60 hectares, in Laserna, near the town of Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region.

In 2013 the crop was devastated by hail and they only produced 17 barrels. The wine was aged longer than usual in oak and then held back for several years before release.

Old Bridge rating:

Evident oak, as is invariably the case with Rioja, but in Contino it’s always balanced and harmonious, not dominant and heavy. It’s just reaching perfect drinkability after 10 years, but will improved and develop for at least 5 more.
