2012 DRINK ME, Branco, Niepoort. Douro, Portugal

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

The Douro – fiercely hot, steep slopes, rocky soils; all ideal for producing rich red wines and Ports. Yet miraculously this is a lively and elegant white! The micha and schist soil really do impart the elusive quality of ‘minerality’ to those wines

Grape variety:

A blend of white port grapes Côdega de Larinho, Rabigato, Gouveio (Godello), Dona Branca, Viosinho and Bical, one quarter aged in wood

Producer:

Dirk Niepoort is an enterprising and innovative Dutchman, famous for his modern approach. This wine sums up his unique and inspirational approach

Old Bridge rating:

The label is irresistible. Fortunately the wine backs it up 100%. A dry but soft blend of varieties normally used for white Port; ripe but delicate; delicious but interesting

Food match:

Light and quaffable but also complex and refined; a super double act with river fish or pasta with ricotta and spinach

Press review:

Jancis Robinson’s ‘Wine of the Week’, 29th March 2014 – “The 2012 white was tasting even better earlier this month than it looked last September and here’s what I wrote about it: ‘Very complex nose – despite the supposed intention of this “casual” wine. Mouthfilling and smoky. Wonderful tension and so juicy! I feel another wine of the week coming on. This is ridiculously good and interesting. A suggestion of laurel leaves. Very appetising but not at all skinny. Hint of shortbread biscuits, too. Only the lack of a really long finish stops me giving this a higher score.”
