EAST INDIA, Emilio Lustau. Sherry

Bin:  961

Alcohol percentage:  20%

Area:

Sherry comes from the vineyards around Jerez in south west Spain. (Although a little known fact is that the majority of the sweet Pedro Ximenez – see below – actually comes from the Montilla district, near Cordoba).

Grape variety:

70% Palomino aged as a dry oloroso (oxidatively in cask) for around 6 years; then blended with 30% Pedro Ximenez which has been aged for around half that time; the combination matured together for 2 to 3 more years

Producer:

Lustau is a great Sherry house, founded in 1896 and now owned by the Caballero family. Renowned for their ‘almacenista’ – wines from a very small batch, matured in a private house, named after the appropriate individual family.

Old Bridge rating:

We sell this at the Old Bridge as a multi purpose ‘medium’ and ‘cream’ sherry in the bar. It’s rich and sweet enough to be in the latter camp, but has the balance and freshness to pass as the former. And it’s SO much better than the commercial amontillado and cream offerings from the big brand. If you don’t believe us, just do the taste comparison, it hasn’t failed yet

Press review:

Bronze Medal Decanter World Wine Awards 2010. Decanter comment: “Rich, luscious raisins and nuts on a deep, balanced palate”.
Chris Kissack, ‘The Wine Doctor’: “Wow – what a colour. With the help of some background light this initially black-looking wine displays gold, amber, red and caramel hues all intertwined. A rich nose, with sweet, scented molasses, and yet you sense this will have balance rather than sticky sweetness. This is indeed the case – the palate has great balance, with acidity, alcohol and sweet molasses fruit all playing a part. Lovely. 18/20”
