2009 ERDENER TREPPCHEN KABINETT, Dr Loosen. Mosel, Germany

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  7.5%

The village of Erden is at the heart of the Mosel, where the spectacularly steep slopes produce the world’s most delicate, finely poised Riesling. Treppchen referst to the stone steps built into those slopes to enable vineyard workers to move up and down. It’s an iron-rich, red slate soil which infuses its wines with that elusive quality of ‘minerality’ so beloved of us wine geeks

Grape variety:

100% Riesling

Ernie Loosen is something of an international ambassador for the Mosel, for Germany itself. Huge energy and great winemaking skills. He owns a quarter of Prälat

A truly great year

Maturity potential:

Charming now, but will evolve for 10 years +

Old Bridge rating:

Classic Mosel Kabinett. Scented, off-dry, gentle; yet simultaneously as crisp as ice. Desperately unfashionable of course, but at least that keeps the price vaguely sensible

Food match:

Difficult. There are many theories about what to eat with a Kabinett. I suggest it should stand alone
