2005 FAUGÈRES, Les Bastides, Jean-Michel Alquier. Languedoc, S. France

Bin:  700

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Inland from Béziers, Faugères is in the heart of the Languedoc. Over half the production in the area is from three co-operatives; there are few serious private producers

Grape variety:

Syrah dominant, with Grenache and Mourvèdre. Aged in oak (30% new oak) for 18 months

Clearly the best estate in Faugères and perhaps one of the best in the whole Languedoc. Created in 1870 and now run by Jean-Michel, having split from his brother Frédéric (who now owns the estate of Gilbert Alquier) in 1996

Maturity potential:

Old Bridge rating:

Powerful and robust, without being rustic. Flavours of the Med – black fruit and wild herbs – with savoury spice and real complexity

£18.95 per bottle in a mixed case of 6 bottles
£17.96 per bottle in a mixed case of 12 bottles
