2014 GAVI DI GAVI, Lugarara, La Giustiniana. Piedmont, Italy

Bin:  118

Alcohol percentage:  12%

Area:

Piedmont (near Turin in north west Italy) is renowned for its great reds, Barolo and Barbaresco. But it also makes fine, delicate whites from Arneis and Cortese. Giustiniana are based in Rovereto, at the heart of the Gavi region

Grape variety:

100% Cortese fermented in stainless steel and bottled in the Spring

Producer:

There are records of winemaking at this estate in the 13th century, when it was part of an Abbey called Rivalta Scrivia. It is now owned by the Lombardini family, who have 40 hectares of vines

Maturity potential:

Always drink Gavi within its first couple of years

Old Bridge rating:

Quintessential Italian white – light, zingy, deliciously drinkable

Food match:

Like most Italian whites, a great aperitif or a good match for seafood and salads

Press review:

Decanter Magazine 2015 –
“17 points Highly Recommended. Fresh with citrus blossom aromas, delicate and pretty. Rich and ripe, but with lots of juicy acidity. Light on its feet, with plenty of mineral and citrus notes. Crisp, with good length.
Andrea Briccarello’s top three:
Textbook Cortese, with all the elegance and finesse expected in a glass. Very polished. This was one of my favourite Gavis and showed the true rustic character of the grape, but also subtle nuances that make it stand out.”
