2011 GEWURZTRAMINER, Herrenweg, Vendange Tardive, Zind Humbrecht. Alsace (Half Bottle)

Bin:  930

Alcohol percentage:  9.5%

Organic

Area:

Zind Humbrecht are based in Wintzenheim and this wine comes from vines close to the winery and also on the Herrenweg vineyard.

Grape variety:

Gewurtraminer heavily ‘botrytised’ by the famous ‘noble rot’ – making for ultra sweet grapes which were then fermented very slowly and kept in large barrel for around a year before bottling

Producer:

Olivier Humbrecht has been rated by Robert Parker as one of the five best winemakers in the world. Taking over the family estate in the late 1980s, he pushes every vineyard he owns to its maximum, producing massively concentrated and complex wines. Critics have pointed to excessive sweetness in wines that would normally be dry, but Olivier now labels all his bottles with a sweetness indicator. This one is medium-sweet

Food match:

Hedonistic aromas; plenty of sweetness (131 grammes per litre, to be exact); huge intensity; but a spicy, lively finish. A wine for strong cheese and a long conversation
