2016 GEWÜRZTRAMINER, Rolly Gassmann. Alsace, France

Bin:  175

Alcohol percentage:  12.5%

Alsace is for ever out of fashion. Normal folk think it (and its wines) are German, not French. Wine buffy folk talk about the wines in reverent tones, but rarely drink the stuff. Maybe the good wines are too much of a good thing, too flavoursome and emphatic, to be everyday quaffers. But for foodie occasions, little can match the bravura intensity of a wine like this.

Grape variety:

100% Gewurztraminer, matured for a year in large, old, oak barrels.

This estate in Rorschwihr is the result of a marriage between a Miss Rolly and Mr Gassmann. Pierre and Louis Gassmann are the umpteenth generation to be in control. Their style is rich and hedonistic. This particular wine is from the vineyard of Kappelweg.

Old Bridge rating:

Quintessential Gewurz aroma (lychee and rose); a rich and luscious mouthful. There is 22 g/l residual sugar here too. Yet despite all this it finishes clean, with more spice than sweetness. A great match for strong cheese.

Food match:

Much more versatile than you would think. Chicken or pork in creamy sauces; strong cheese (particularly Munster from Alsace of course); after dinner sipping.
