2012 GEYSERVILLE, Ridge. California (Double Magnum)

Bin:  899

Alcohol percentage:  14.4%

Area:

A vineyard of old bush vines in Dry Creek, Sonoma, just north of Healdsburg; cultivated and marketed by Ridge since 1972. There’s an ideal combination of cool, foggy mornings and sunny afternoonsm, together with gravelly clay soils which retain moisture and help the grapes ripen slowly. All this reins in the otherwise over-prolifice Zinfandel vines

Grape variety:

71% Zinfandel, 7% Petite Sirah, 19% Carignane 2% Mataro, 1% Alicante Bouschet; aged in American oak for 15 months (20% new)

Producer:

Paul Draper’s Ridge is perhaps the most respected winery in California. Even more so now that the three separate estates (Montebello, Geyserville and Lytton Springs) have their own wineries and so operate like a French ‘Domaine’ rather than a bigger operation

Food match:

Zin is a versatile food match as long as you enjoy big flavours. The Ridge style is more ‘structured’ and less fruit-emphatic than most – so works brilliantly with anything from ‘spag bol’ to a mild curry
