2017 GIGONDAS, La Bastide Saint Vincent. Southern Rhône.

Bin:  690

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

Gigondas is a small village in the southern Rhône, situated on a hillside beneath the famously jagged Dentelles de Montmirail. It was second (after its more illustrious neighbour Châteauneuf-du-Pape) to have its own appellation, back in 1971. The name is from the Latin jocunditas, “merry city”.

Grape variety:

80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah; matured gently in concrete vats for around a year (no oak – Grenache is easily overwhelmed by wood).

Producer:

The domaine dates back to the 18th century. Laurent Daniel is the current member of the family to run the estate. He has 22 hectares spread across several southern Rhône appellations, but predominantly Vacqueyras and Gigondas.

Old Bridge rating:

As is often the case, this offers Châteauneuf-du-Pape quality at a much better price. Very rich and broad.

Press review:

“I’d normally be wary of a wine with such a high alcohol level but this is Grenache at its most delicate-tasting (the Clos des Papes trick?), and has all the luscious rose-petal appeal of one of the finest Châteauneufs or, my new enthusiasm, Garnacha from the Gredos mountains outside Madrid.” Jancis Robinson, November 2019
