2013 GRATALLOPS, Alvaro Palacios. Priorat, Spain (Magnum)

Bin:  899

Alcohol percentage:  14.5%

Area:

The beautiful mountainous region of Priorat, 60 miles inland from Barcelona, has since the late 70’s become the trendiest region in Spain. Old vines were suddenly turned into explosively rich, powerful wines that wowed the critics, especially in the US. As in Argentina, the secret is the day-night temperature variation. Gratallops is a sub-region within the area.

Grape variety:

Garnacha with Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Picapoll, aged for 16 months in new French oak.

Producer:

Alvaro Palacios is one of nine children of the owners of Rioja’s Palacios Remondo. He struck out on his own here in Priorat in 1989 (and now also in Bierzo further west) having trained with Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Pétrus. The top wine from the estate (L’Ermita) is Spain’s most expensive red, at around £550.

Old Bridge rating:

By Priorat standards this is relatively gentle and harmonious. By anyone else’s standards, it’s still a pretty big wine!
