2014 GRENACHE BLANC, The Foundry. Paardeberg, SA

Bin:  270

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Grapes are from a vineyard neighbouring The Foundry’s home farm in Voor Paardeberg, north of Paarl, but south of Malmbesbury. Soils are shale and decomposed granite

Grape variety:

Grenache Blanc, fermented and matured in oak (but no new oak) for 6 months

Producer:

Chris Williams is winemaker at the famous Meerlust winery. As a part-time business he runs his own boutique label ‘The Foundry’, leasing vineyards of Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Syrah

Maturity potential:

Drink within two years of purchase

Old Bridge rating:

Brilliantly under-stated; clean, dry but rounded. Not a wine to knock you off your feet as soon as you taste it, but a wine of subtle intensity and character that seems to grow with each glass you drink.

Press review:

Jamie Goode’s website (wineanorak.com): “One of the standout whites was this: Chris Williams’ Foundry Grenache Blanc. A bargain. His Viognier is also sensationally good”
Tim Atkin, Decanter Magazine: “As well as making the wines at Meerlust, Chris Williams has his own brand. His Syrah and Viognier are both top notch, but this minerally, lightly oaked example could outdo them both”
Five star rating in Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2014
Jancis Robinson, February 2014 – “Crystal-clear pale greenish straw. Clean, crisp, floral nose. Much livelier than many a Grenache Blanc. Just a hint of chew at the end to give it structure. Very appetising, Clearly work has been put in to combat this grape’s occasional heaviness though the granite soils of the Voor Paardeberg may well have done all the work. “
